Is miscarriage the same as abortion?

Question #105

No. Miscarriage is the tragic death of a child in the womb by natural causes. Abortion is the intentional killing of a child in the womb. The deaths may both be grievous, but they are not morally the same because the cause and intent are not the same.

Scripture consistently treats the shedding of innocent blood as a matter of guilt before God (Exodus 20:13; Proverbs 6:16-17). That means intention matters. When a mother suffers miscarriage, she has not become a murderer. She should be met with compassion, mourning, prayer, and practical care, not suspicion or accusation (Romans 12:15).

The abolitionist position opposes the deliberate killing of preborn children, not the natural sorrow of losing a child. Christians should speak carefully here, because confused language can wound grieving parents and blur the real evil of abortion.
