How do we answer claims that abolition is too harsh?
God forbids partiality in justice (Deuteronomy 1:17). Abolition is not harsh; it is consistent love for every one of our neighbors and represents equal justice/protection. Softening justice for the preborn denies their humanity. We pair truthful law with rich mercy for mothers and fathers, holding out Christ who saves sinners and upholds righteousness.
The death penalty is prescribed in the Noahic covenant (Genesis 9:6), a covenant every nation on earth still enjoys being a part of. It is our duty to respond to murder appropriately. Rather than abolition being harsh, it is anything short of abolition that is harsh to those still allowed to be murdered under the cover of law.
Abolition is the biblical way to teach a culture the seriousness of their sin, leading them to Christ and providing civil penalties that will deter people from heinous crimes.
